Ashwagandha (pronounced ASH-WAH-GAN-DAH) is a botanical native to India and a very popular herb in Ayurvedic medicine. It is an adaptogenic herb [so is able to support the body in dealing with stress] and highly regarded in Ayurveda as say Ginseng is in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb and considered to be calming in its effects. It is great for relieving symptoms of stress and is good for those who are tired but too wired to get a good night’s sleep.

The name Ashwagandha in the Sanskrit translates to ‘smell of a horse’, ashva meaning horse and gandha meaning smell. This is perceived as meaning the ‘essence of a horse’, which speaks to its ability to give the consumer the strength and stamina of a horse.

The name somnifera, tells us of its sedating nature. Somni being the Latin root word for sleep. So although over time, this adaptogen helps to build strength and vitality, it has a calming nature, which is why ashwagandha is commonly prescribed by herbalists for people who are overstressed and have trouble sleeping, the person that is typically “tired, but wired”.
