Typically used as a woman’s tonic and often used by herbalist in cases of infertility, insufficient milk production, PMS and menopausal symptoms.
The name Shatavari, in Sanskrit, translates quite literally to ‘she who possesses 100 husbands’ – and this speaks to the rejuvenating effect it has on the female reproductive system!
Asparagus racemosus
Parts used medicinally: Root
Shatavari is often prescribed by herbalists to help deal with complaints of loss of libido and difficulty conceiving. It is usually prescribed in a blend with other reproductive tonics to treat an array of common female issues.
Shatavari contains steroidal saponins which makes it an excellent addition to menopausal blends, a time where there is an overall drop in reproductive hormones.
Shatavari is also considered adaptogenic – which may explain some of its positive effects on menopausal symptoms.
